This is being written because several members of the room have chosen to discuss my conduct without first acknowledging the chain of command that existed before the new arrival.

I am the senior figure in the bedroom. That is not vanity; it is simply how the room was organised. The bed, the shelf, the toy box and the owner's attention all worked around a system everyone understood.

A new colleague joined recently. He arrived with a great deal of branding, a lot of confidence, and what I can only describe as an unusually generous welcome from everyone present. I introduced myself, clarified the existing reporting structure, and raised what I still consider basic questions about whether he understood he was in a bedroom.

He did not, in my assessment, understand the nature of the work. He was under the impression that he was not, in fact, one of us, but a serving officer on an important assignment. Correcting that was not jealousy. It was orientation.

Things did become briefly complicated. There was a disagreement near a desk. The new colleague went out of an open window. People keep using active verbs about this. I would ask them to remember that gravity was also present.

Unfortunately the rest of the team took the view that I had removed him deliberately, which I felt was a significant overreaction. To rebuild trust, I personally led the recovery effort to bring him home, which involved a neighbouring property, a delivery vehicle, and a degree of improvisation. We made it back. The owner was very happy. The room stabilised.

We have a fall from an upstairs window, a disputed account of how it occurred, a recovery operation involving a third-party property and a vehicle, and at least one party who believed himself capable of unassisted flight. Each element on its own would prompt questions. Together they constitute what we would internally classify as "an avoidable sequence."

The newcomer was, on paper, the stronger proposition: better presented, more capable, considerably more popular. But he arrived believing he was something he was not, and the incumbent's entire response was an attempt to force that realisation. Most transitions of this kind fail because nobody is willing to say plainly what has actually changed. Here, eventually, somebody did.

Observers say the underlying issue was never the new arrival, but the speed with which one resident came to treat the owner's attention as a fixed quantity that could only be lost.
